Sounds of Light – Press Release
A Unique Evening of Art Set To Music

On Thursday 7 May 2009, the Florence Hall at the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) was the venue for an exclusive evening event setting out to intertwine the potent and emotive oil paintings of Prague-based artist Alexandr Onishenko, with Michael Omer's atmospheric and evocative music. These original compositions were directly inspired by the paintings themselves and written to celebrate and explore the experience of each image.

Passing Through Birches
At first glance, a beautiful birch forest, which then imperceptibly draws us into its secret inner world. A world, which, as it closes in around us, and the clear azure sky recedes above us, begins to enchant and bewitch, as it pulls us further into a land of no return. But this is a place where world-weary melancholy may find hope and solace, where perhaps something lost is re-found, or a love reborn.
Scored for violin and piano, and performed by
Siân Philipps & Michael Omer.

Summer’s Peak
High summer, a haven of peace - this explores the lyrical feeling of well-being created by a gentle summer's breeze playing on the leaves, grasses and flowers in this beautiful rural idyll. We are transported to the heavenly delights made possible by nature’s infinite colour and form.
Scored for wind quintet and performed by the London Mozart Players:
Monica McCarron Flute Tony Catterick French Horn
Katie Clemmow Oboe Robert Porter Bassoon
Margaret Archibald Clarinet/Bass Clarinet

Chapel
Drawing it’s inspiration from the sheer beauty and texture of the heavenly skies, this piece balances our earthbound aspirations, with the infinite possibilities of the space beyond our immediate gaze. The music soon acquires hints of mysticism as it changes pace and transports us across the sky for this exploration of all things visionary. Scored for solo oboe and performed by Katie Clemmow
